Why support the Oregon Tuna Classic

It’s all about community and caring about our neighbors – In Oregon 1 in 5 families will need the assistance of the Oregon Food Bank during the year. The focus of these tournaments is to feed those in need, while having a good time and sharing our passion for fishing. Some of the tuna from the tournaments will go directly to the local coastal food banks as fresh caught and delivered to the people of that port community and some will be canned and provided to the Oregon Food Bank to also assist those in need along the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Food Bank is a non-profit corporation (which makes your contributions tax-deductible, as allowable by law) and was selected as Oregon’s most admired non-profit by 800 CEO’s and senior officers within Oregon operations. The Oregon Tuna Classic is proud to be a partner of an organization with such a worthwhile cause.

Oregon Tuna Classic raises $25,000 and 7,000 pounds of tuna to Oregon Food Bank

PORTLAND, Ore. (Nov. 21, 2007) – The third annual Oregon Tuna Classic raised $25,000 and more than 7,300 pounds of albacore tuna for the Oregon Food Bank Network. “The event was a huge success, and we’re hoping to make it even better next year, says Mike Jespersen, Oregon Tuna Classic chairman. “We’ve received overwhelming support and enthusiasm from participants and sponsors who are happy to help Oregon Food Bank fight hunger.” This year’s Oregon Tuna Classic more than doubled its cash donation to Oregon Food Bank and increased the donation of tuna over the previous year, when event organizers donated $12,000 and 6,800 pounds of tuna. “The Oregon Tuna Classic links a local, high-quality food resource with hungry people in coastal communities,” says Rachel Bristol, OFB’s CEO. “We thank the Oregon Tuna Classic organizers, sponsors and participants for their generous donations of funds, time and effort to provide wholesome food for people who are hungry.” The Oregon Tuna Classic started three years ago when a small group of fishermen realized that they were catching more fish than they could eat. “We wanted to share the fresh, nutritious food we were catching with people who are hungry,” says Bud Hosner, Oregon Tuna Classic board member. “The tournaments bring the fishing community together to do what we love while raising funds for a great cause.” The event has grown from 17 to more than 140 teams, and donations to OFB have increased from about 100 tuna to more than 7,300 pounds of tuna and $25,000. This summer, fishing teams competed to catch the largest tuna in three events in Newport, Hammond and Garibaldi. Winning teams, Seelicious, captained by Bud Hosner, and G Loomis, captained by Gary Blackmun, donated their prize money to Oregon Food Bank. Organizers cancelled the fishing portion of the Newport event on July 7 due to poor weather conditions and donated prize money from the canceled tournament to the OFB Network. Individual participants also made donations to the OFB Network.

“A huge thank you to all of the teams that participated in the tournament and to our sponsors,” says Del Stephens, sponsorship coordinator. ““We absolutely couldn’t pull off a multi-day, multi-location series of events without their support.

Special thanks to critical partners Aman Marine, G Loomis, Staff Jennings, Rogue Brewery, ifish.net and Ducks Unlimited.” Sponsors included Glacier Bay Catamarans, Aman Marine, The Old Mill RV Park and Marina, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Rogue Brewery, G.
